I’m Larry, and welcome to ‘Horseshoes’, a reflection of my lifelong passion for the game of horseshoes. It’s more than just a fun weekend activity for me—it’s been part of my DNA since childhood. You could say I grew up with it right in the backyard of Dixie, a small, tight-knit community on the outskirts of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Think back to when times were simple: we’d cut up a rubber hose, stick through some coat hanger wire, form a horseshoe, and play hard with sticks in the ground. That’s how it all began for me. These memories hold a special place in my heart, something I carried with me even while serving 20 years in the USMC, where horseshoes provided a constant reminder of home, tradition, and camaraderie.
Dedication colors every entry of this blog, paying homage to my brother who passed away in 2023. He was my favorite opponent, our competition fueled many afternoons. Although the horseshoe pit at his house in Dixie may stand silent without him, the memories built there continue to resonate within me, perfectly symbolizing how you can take me out of the country, but never the country out of me.
Transitioning “Embracing the Legacy” naturally to “Exploring Life Beyond Horseshoes” is as seamless as swinging a horseshoe. Beyond embodying a passion, my journey in Dixie and personal connection to the game blend into an embrace of life beyond these rustic frames. Here, resilience, friendships, and the spirit of horseshoes have enriched my life in profound ways.
Exploring Life Beyond Horseshoes
Beyond just a mere game, horseshoes have driven my life philosophy. It’s about focus, persistence, and the joy that comes from genuine connection—exactly what I love about playing this timeless sport. You’re likely to find me reminiscing, either in rich memory or fresh experience, about our field competitions that go hand-in-hand with laughter and stories.
Growing up in Dixie taught me the values of community, a spirit I cherish deeply and continue to nurture. Although I’ve traveled far and wide, the simplicity and joy of playing horseshoes keep me rooted in those early days of friendly contests and afternoon gatherings.
Even in my years with the USMC, I never let go of this passion. The discipline and resilience it taught me align perfectly with my life approach, shaping me into someone who values the craft and cohesion of playing amongst friends—a timeless bond strengthened by every toss.
But of course, life isn’t all about horseshoes. I believe in broadening horizons, and so I’ve embraced other fulfilling hobbies that cater to both relaxation and creative expression. Whether it’s hiking or engaging in community events, they complement my agile, dynamic lifestyle.
All in all, horseshoes remain my anchor—a way to foster camaraderie and celebrate tradition. It’s my personal joy to share this part of my life with all of you, inviting both seasoned players and newcomers to feel the same thrill of every score. After all, isn’t life best when shared over the clinking of metal on metal and the warmth of cherished memories?
